Following on from other anime movie adaptations, such as Ghost in the Shell and Death Note – and the long-awaited, long gestating Akira and Bleach films - comes a big screen version of Attack on Titan, thanks to Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and Harry Potter producer David Heyman.

Deadline reports that Warner Bros. are in the process of acquiring the rights to the manga which is set in a post-apocalyptic world where surviving humans live behind high walls to remain safe from the Titans — enormous, vicious monsters that eat humans. As well as the original manga, the series has been adapted into a series of novels, an anime (with a second season coming this year), video games, live-action films, and a TV series in Japan.

It’s clear that Warner Bros. are aiming for a multi-film franchise, although the pathway from original material to silver screen for anime and manga adaptations is fraught with controversial casting decisions and long periods trapped in development hell.

Here’s hoping David Heyman can guide the Titans towards the big screen.
